S-1116: 12V Briefcase Solar Generator Review

S-1116: 12V Briefcase Solar Generator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own four of these. Got them from another source. I have all of them in a closet waiting for an extended power outage. I purchased Radio Shack #274-1573 adapters so that I can plug them directly into my four Xantrex XPower Powerpack 400 plus units (battery pack power sources). These power packs give me both 12 Volt DC and 115 Volt AC. I keep them fully charged by plugging them in to the wall socket. As for choosing solar panels, If I could afford it (and I was many years younger) I might have purchased the much more expensive monocrystalline solar panels. They retain 80% of original efficiency after twenty five years of continuous use. By contrast, these much cheaper S-1116 briefcase panels will only last about five years of continuous use. Also, the monocrystalline panels are much more efficient and thus smaller while producing higher wattage. A nice portable monocrystalline briefcase is available at much higher cost. It is even somewhat weather proof. The S-1116 is not weather proof. If you want to set up a lifetime solar power source, buy monocrystalline solar panels. But, I assume you are only wanting a portable solar power source for emergencies. If so, I think this cheaper S-1116 is your best choice. It might also be a good choice considering that they do last five years - and the scientific community is continuously improving, and reducing cost of, everything electronic. All four of my panels tested better than advertised. Maybe I should have given the S-1116 five stars.

Wagan 400-Watt Power Dome EX Jumpstarter with Built-In Air Compressor Review

Wagan 400-Watt Power Dome EX Jumpstarter with Built-In Air Compressor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a fantastic unit and the price is on par with other brand units.
Pros:
It has a charge indicator, FM/AM radio with aux. audio input jack as well as a USB power supply port for those suckers who own an IPOD, the LED light is bright enough, the presence of an air compressor is a plus and the hose is a decent length but doesn't appear so at first glance, 2 AC outlets as well as 1 DC outlet should provide ample space to plug in anything, and of course the jump cables for car starting which, like the air hose, is longer than it appears in the picture (about 2.5 feet)
The reason I gave it only 4 stars:
the power switch for the AC outlets on mine is a 2 stage switch, meaning it has off, 1, and 2 settings. The 1 does nothing and the 2 powers the outlets. Based upon the pictures, it is clear that a simple ON/OFF switch was meant to be there and probably is in most units but for whatever reason, mine has a different one (no biggie). The air compressor works fine but I have a problem with the fact the dial goes to 260psi. Who is pumping that much air into something? Because of that, I need to look closely when I am filling tires because the distance from 0-35/40 is very small. The tips for the air hose come loose so they will get tossed or lost easily. Lastly, the speaker for the radio is not the greatest, it would have been nice to have a built-in amp and an audio out but i guess this thing can only do so much.
Overall, it is a great buy and should do the job well for most people.

Wagan EL2201 Elite 400 Watt Pure Sine Wave Inverter Review

Wagan EL2201 Elite 400 Watt Pure Sine Wave Inverter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The stapled box did not look like it had been opened but the unit inside was so beat up it looked used. Upon close inspection it may have received the damage during manufacturing. The screws were even stripped. I can't recall a new product looking so beat up out of the box.
When I tried a light bulb it gradually did light up over a few seconds. When I tried my LCD TV, which pulls 150 watts the TV started flickering and making a horrible sound. No actual picture came up. When I plugged in another cheaper 400 watt modified sign wave inverter the TV worked fine.
I'm not sure what the deal is with this unit but I'm sending it back. It does not work and it looks like it was dragged down a dirt road before it was delivered to me. Good riddance.

I am able to power my telescope, laptop, and Canon Eos for hours, and have still never gone below 3/4 charge. I have learned the key to success though, is the unit must remain on the charger when stored. They clearly warn you to charge at least monthly. Only negative is recharge takes a very long time (normally overnight. Wish it had 1 more cigarette adapter.

Xantrex XPower Powerpack 400 Plus Portable Backup Power Source Review

Xantrex XPower Powerpack 400 Plus Portable Backup Power Source
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This powerpack pretty much works as advertised. The coolest thing is the builtin 400 Watt inverter which allows you plug in almost any AC powered device. Great for emergency power or just portable camping power! Unit charges quickly using the supplied DC adapter or in about a day using the supplied AC adapter.
The only drawback is that the builtin air compressor isn't fan cooled so it can only operate about 10-15 minutes at a time before it over heats and air flow could be higher. Another option would be to plug in a high flow, heavy duty air compressor into the builtin 12V outlet or inverter.

Tripp Lite APS2424 2400W 24V DC to AC Inverter with Automatic Line-to-Battery 55/14-Amp Charger Review

Tripp Lite APS2424 2400W 24V DC to AC Inverter with Automatic Line-to-Battery 55/14-Amp Charger
Average Reviews:

I just purchased the APS2424 after a fantastic phone call with their technical support team.
I had been considering installing this unit in our Wood-Fired Pizza Truck (BasicKneadsPizza.com). We had purchased a nice generator, but after installing one on another truck, I wasn't blown away, even the quiestest Honda 3000 still stinks like a traffic jam.
James from Tripp-Lite's technical support line picked up quickly and gave me a free refresher course on physics; 36v input means 3 batteries in series, 24v=2 batteries. To double the capacity, a second bank in parallel would cost ~1/3 less with the 24v APS2424.
Not to mention the Auto-Transfer switch, and load sensor, this unit is basically going to be my prep table's personal assistant.
Our truck is going to rock this unit and two batteries in series. I am going to return an $80 transfer switch, sell a Parallax converter/charger for $100 and a Honda Eu3000is for $1200.
Generator system= ~$1600, noisy, stinky, needs gas and oil changes, huge amount of work to install.
Inverter system= ~$850, silent, maintenence free.
Sold.

Duracell DPP-600HD Powerpack 600 Jump Starter & Emergency Power Source with Radio Review

Duracell DPP-600HD Powerpack 600 Jump Starter and Emergency Power Source with Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought this for extended camping trips. We frequently find ourselves at events that require camping out, and with limited or no electrical. I wanted something that could supply power to our wide variety of gadgets that we typically need as a modern family.
Put the Powerpack to the test on a full week trip recently. Through the whole week, it was used for a number of purposes. Including, recharging cell phones, camera batteries, various media devices. It also was used to power a compressor to air up 3 different air mattress (including a queen), and refill them as needed. It also ran a hair straightener and blow dryer a few times. And it was used to run a breathing treatment machine for a friends asthma at least once a day. Might have been used for other things.
The results. The Powerpack lasted through day 5 of a 7 day trip, but we had brought along a lawn battery to attach as a backup. It was simple to setup, and the provided the power we needed for the last 2 days. The main battery lasted about as long as I thought it would, so I was satisified throughout.
The reasons why it didn't get 5 stars. Two reasons, and both kinda minor. One, no way to turn off the clock. I know its not much of a drain on a battery this size, but I would prefer to maximize my usuage. And two, the power meter is no super accurate. It showed 90% power on Day 4, 70% power on day 5, only to be out of power come the morning of day 6.
To be fair though, a few things where plugged into it overnight from day 5 to 6. Those items where low power or turned off. So its hard to say if they caused the drain. Maybe if they hadn't been plugged in, the main battery would have lasted all week.
Overall, very happy with the purchase.

Duracell Powerpack 450 Jumpstarter with Built-In 150 PSI Air Compressor Review

Duracell Powerpack 450 Jumpstarter with Built-In 150 PSI Air Compressor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Works fine. It comes with 1/2 charge. Don't use it. Follow the instructions and give it that first long charge and it will work fine. I am in the country so a low tire can become a real issue. I just went out with the machine and topped off a low tire no problem. I had to try the electric because it goes out here from time to time. I plugged in a lamp and it ran for 6hrs. and 15 mins. And I am guessing it will run heat tape for 10 hrs or more. Important when you lose power at 10 below. And I feel confident if I have a low car battery this will work as advertised. Just to be able to get a car started at 5 in the morning and not be late for work is worth the purchase price. And the real reason I wanted it was for in the spring and during the summer for the lawn tractor. Every year at least one tire is low. And every year I get at least one slow leak 5 mins. before being done. This year I am ready.

Honeywell HW1000i 1,000 Watt 53cc 4-Stroke Portable Gas Powered Inverter Generator (CARB Compliant) Review

Honeywell HW1000i 1,000 Watt 53cc 4-Stroke Portable Gas Powered Inverter Generator (CARB Compliant)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this generator to have as an emergency battery charger run through our Xantrex inverter/charger aboard our cruising sailboat. I also wanted to have portable power for low power hand power tools without taking from the ship's battery bank. I wasn't sure if it would run my very fussy, electronically controlled Bosch saber saw because that saw won't run off our on board Xantrex inverter even though computers and other electronics work fine from from the on board 120v power. The Bosch runs perfectly off of the Honeywell 1000i: it must produce a true sign wave output.
It is shipped without oil, so I added the prescribed amount with the little spouted oil container provided (very handy for our 4 stroke 9.8 hp outboard too), added gas, and gave a pull. She started on the third pull and ran smooth and quieter than my old Honda 1000 watt generator. On subsequent tries both hot and cold, she started on the first pull.
That's how I reviewed it six months ago. After about 30 hours of use, the picture changed. First, the starter cord broke; warranty wouldn't cover it. Having more pressing projects aboard the boat, I paid a technician to fix it. Then it began to sometimes not start, other times quit after running for between 10 minutes and three hours. This pattern has continued through at least a month of twice weekly use. I have checked everything. When it won't go, it is because it has no spark. Won't bore you with technical details, but I understand small engines, so I checked things thoroughly. Appears to be a problem with the electronic module that controls the primary circuit of the magneto. Parts next to impossible to get. Honeywell certified technicians know less about it than I do. Most have never seen a small Honeywell. I have learned to hate this machine. Should have bought a Honda or Yamaha.

I purchased this inverter last year to install in our new Lance P/U camper for our trip of a lifetime to Alaska. Let me say the unit worked excellent. I installed the feed cables with #2 AWG after the first attempt with #8 left to much voltage drop to the unit. Like they tell you in the manual, DUH! Anyhow the unit worked flawlessly with our 19" Samsung HDTV, no retrace lines or any interference with the TV reception, something I was slightly worried about because of the "square sine" output of the unit. Using the unit for everyday AC uses, TV, laptop, digi camera and other chargers was perfect. We would often leave it on during our long day trips and everything would be charged when we got to our destinations. And while it did run our toaster and microwave, not at the same time, the unit would "whine" a bit while doing it. It does pull pretty hard on your battery according to your load. What I really like about the unit is the low amp draw in a no load condition,
