(More customer reviews)Here's the pros and cons wrt usin this alternator for a pedal power generator. CONs first. (1) If you pedal with nothing hooked up to it, you wil ruin this alternator. The internal regulator will blow. (2)Only people who are over 5 ft. in height will be able to get it going fast enough to start the voltage and current flowing. Not a good design for children. (3) If you try and charge a battery with it, you it will be way to hard to pedal unless you put a .5 to 1 ohm resistor in series. (4) you have to use a bike that has at gears, or you may not be able to get it spinning fast enough to start it.
PROS: Regulated DC voltage output at 14.8V. Rugged design being that it's designed to run under the hood of a car.
I hooked this car alternator up as a bike generator. The only major limitations is that you have to use this alternator with a bike that has at least 10 gears and some one who is at least 12 years old. The reason for having to use a bike with gears is because in order for this car alternator / bike generator to start generating electricity, you have to spin the rear wheel of your bike up to about 300 RPMs (Revolutions Per Minute) which is about 23 MPH (Miles per hour. After you read that point, the generator will start doing its thing and you can pedal at about half that speed comfortably.
