Some people have said it was "loud" but I didn't understand that at all. Yes, there is a quiet "whirring" sound from the fan, but if you're driving down a highway or have the radio on low, you'd never hear the fan.
I think it was a good purchase. Worth the money and I'd recommend it to a friend.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this product with the intention of using it for charging my laptop while on the road. According to the product's spec sheet, it is rated to supply 140-watts of continuous power (and 150-watts peak) and it is marketed as being a suitable power supply for laptops. Unfortunately, when I plugged my laptop (which uses a 90-watt charger) in to the unit it would overload and trip the surge protection after a few seconds. I was thoroughly unamused.
Additionally, I found this nugget from a review on Newegg:
"The problem with this unit is that neither the hot or the neutral plug on the unit are referenced to ground. In other words, the neutral actually has a potential of 60v above ground. This can lead to some shocking situations. The ground leg of the inverter is just a dummy hole -- there is no actual ground.
In layman's terms, the electrical design of this unit is very poor and would never achieve household electrical standards. I can't figure out how they are allowed to manufacture and sell this unit especially when they advertise it for use with laptops."
And upon further inspection, I can confirm that this is accurate, which could possibly be the reason why my laptop charger overloads the unit despite the fact that the unit is supposed to be able to supply 140-watts continuously.
This unit does seem to work well for small electronic devices, but I cannot recommend this unit for any electrical device that draws much power or uses a 3-prong connector.

You can plug stuff into your car and use them when you're driving that you normally could only use in your house. There's a built in cooling fan that's quite loud, but i generally can't hear it over my margarita mixer, and belt sander.

I usually use it with jump pack/ battery backup system that I built out of this battery boxMinnKota Trolling Motor Power Center. It works much better than a typical jump pack that you can purchase on here. I use an 80 amp hour (usable power without extremely discharging battery) so I can run whatever I need to for quite a long time. I keep it recharged via my cigarette lighter to the boxes cigarette lighter (you will need a cable with 2 male ends). It is a very good setup and this inverter easily mounts to the side of the box. Hope this helps and gives the inverter a better rating... The other two reviews are absolutely worthless.
By the way, you can purchase an adapter to be able to plug this into your cigarette lighter. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO USE 800 WATTS! You could then use this inverter to power equipment up to about 150 - 200 watts otherwise you will need to attach it directly to the battery.

(More customer reviews)This is in response to another reviewer who gave this a 1-star rating, because he couldn't use more than 125 watts without blowing the cigarette lighter fuse. The inverter is not at fault. Most cig lighter sockets are limited to a maximum of ten amps of current, and 10 amps times 12 volts equals 120 watts.
If you want to use a 300 watt inverter up to its full capacity, you can't use the cigareatte ligher socket to power the inverter. Instead you'll need to install an accessory power socket with at least the same amp rating as the inverter's fuse.
These accessory sockets are often sold with battery clamps on them for direct attachment to a battery, but some models of accessory sockets can also be directly wired to a spare fuse slot on your vehicle's fuse panel and mounted on or under the dash. Many vehicles have 2 or 3 spare fuse circuits available for add-on electrical accessories like this.
If you are not comfortable doing work on your vehicle's electrical system yourself, I suggest contacting a car audio business to see if they can install one of these accessory sockets for you, or if they can direct you to someone in your area who can.

(More customer reviews)The battery input terminals are extremely undersized to carry the maximum 80-100 Ampere battery current specified for full 100 Ampere load.
The binding post screw appears to be only a #6 or #8 bolt. I expected at least 1/4" for the current drawn. Possibly will be usable with "Real" battery cables.
The wire gauge of cables included is too small to carry the current without excessive voltage drop. The lug on the cable to too large for the small battery post on the inverter, reducing contact area.
Due to the input cable/connector voltage drop the unit functions will not provide full voltage at 1000W continuous rated power let alone the 2000W maximum surge specification. Might be OK with heavier input cables. It seems to be very well built mechanically.

Update 6/2009: Bummer. It burned up. Plugged it in one day and within seconds smoke was pouring out. Had to throw it out of the car and let it cool off before sending it to the electronics recycler. Scary. Amazon won't let me change the rating, but generally I would give burning electronic devices no more than one star.

Cobra CPI 475 400 Watt Power Inverter Review

(More customer reviews)We needed a higher power interter to use in our RV when camping without shore power. We needed to power two laptop computers, charge cell phones and PDAs and run a small fan. This Cobra unit reviewed well so I ordered one from Amazon. It was delivered in just a few days (thanks Amazon). It has a solid feel to it, connectors are of good quality, and it is small enough not to be obtrusive in the confines of an RV. I used the cigarette lighter plug and put this on our dining table. The two AC plugs accommodated two AC adapters for laptops. As a bonus, there is a USB port on the Cobra that will supply 5 volts! So, I can charge my Blackberry simultaneously. What a delight!! The unit has an internal fan which only runs as needed. If I'm just charging a cell phone, then the fan does not run - but when I've got a load on - the fan runs and effectively cools the inverter. This is not a pure sine wave inverter but I've had no trouble at all using it with various laptops, pdas, fans, and cell phone chargers. I've not used it to power a TV or Radio (those could be more sensitive to interter noise). After a months use, I'm delighted with the inverter - it meets my needs completely.
